  • Description

Regular serial visits to Kariba from Salisbury, Rhodesia, are encouraging many people to go on pleasure trips of inspection. The reasonable fare is an added inducement.

It can be a most intriguing and informative adventure for a lot of people. Leaving the airport visitors are driven out to dam site, and the first thing that strikes them is that the project is a far bigger one than they had ever imagined.

The tourists are taken on a conducted tour and the various aspects of the work in progress are described to them. Work is now in progress on the south bank coffer dam and parts of the main wall. Steal piles are swung out overhead and slowly lowered into position for driving into the river bed. It's a manoeuvre demanding careful team work.

The pivot of the whole set-up is the Blondin Machine. Instructions are received by loudspeaker from the operatives on the site. The Blondin operator then starts up the overhead cables which carry the cement and other materials over to the scene of operations. The tonnage of concrete poured into the foundations has already reached astronomical proportions.

As the concrete goes in it displaces the water which is pumped out. From the footbridge spectators can look down on the spot where the water is gushing out of the diversion tunnel.

For anybody interested in this sort of thing it is a sight well worth seeing: it is a human and engineering feat of tremendous proportions. Kariba will become one of the wonders of Africa.
