  • Description

THE SOVIET FREIGHTER -- "SVIRSK" -- ARRIVED IN HER HOME PORT OF VLADISVOSTOK LAST FRIDAY (AUGUST 18) AFTER BEING DETAINED IN THE NORTH CHINA PORT OF DAIREN.

THE SOVIET UNION HAS PROTESTED STRONGLY TO PEKING OVER THE INCIDENT. MOSCOW WARNED THAT THE "SVIRSK" AFFAIR HAD JEOPARDISED TRADE AGREEMENTS BETWEEN THE TWO COUNTRIES.

THOUSANDS OF PEOPLE GATHERED AT THE DOCKS OF THE RUSSIAN PACIFIC PORT TO GREET THE SVIRSK, WHICH HAD ANTI SOVIET SLOGANS PAINTED ON ITS HULL AND SUPERSTRUCTURE. THE SHIP'S MASTER, CAPTAIN VICTOR KORZHOV, TOLD THE CROWD THAT HE WAS SEIZED BY ARMED MEN IN DAIREN ON AUGUST 11 AND THROWN INTO PRISON. HE SAID HE WAS BEATEN AND FORCED TO LISTEN TO THE SOUNDS OF RED GUARDS RAMPAGING ON HIS SHIP THROUGH A LOUDSPEAKER IN HIS CELL. LATER HE WAS TAKEN BACK TO THE SHIP AND FOUND ANTI-SOVIET SLOGANS CAUSED ON THE SUPERSTRUCTURE. THE RADIO ROOM HAD BEEN BADLY DAMAGED. THEN HE AND THE SHIP'S NAVIGATOR, WHO HAD REFUSED TO WEAR A MAO TSE TUNG BADGE, WERE "TRIED" ON THE DOCKSIDE BY RED GUARDS. THE SHIP WAS FINALLY ALLOWED TO SAIL WHEN THE SOVIET PREMIER MR. KOSYGIN, SENT A PERSONAL MESSAGE TO THE CHINESE PRIME MINISTER MR. CHOU EN LAI.
