Background: OLYMPIC SILVER MEDALLIST, MOHAMED GAMOUDI, OF TUNISIA, YESTERDAY (SUNDAY) WON THE ANNUAL 10,000 METRES INTERNATIONAL CROSS-COUNTRY RACE AT SAN SEBASTIAN, SPAIN.

GAMOUDI, WHO WON THE SILVER MEDAL AT TOKYO OVER THE SAME DISTANCE ON THE TRACK, CLOCKED 30 MINUTES 44.2 SECONDS. THE ONLY REAL CHALLENGE TO THE WINNER CAME FROM FRANCISCO ARIZMENDI, OF SPAIN, WHO WON LAST YEAR'S INTERNATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP IN DUBLIN.

ARIZMENDI STAYED WITH GAMOUDI FOR MUCH OF THE RACE, AND EVEN HAD A SHORT LEAD TOWARDS THE END OF THE RACE. HOWEVER, IN THE LAST THOUSAND METRES THE TUNISIAN SPRINTED AWAY TO VICTORY, AND ARIZMENDI FINISHED SECOND IN 30 MINUTES 50.5 SECONDS.

TEAM PLACINGS WERE ANNOUNCED ON A CITY BASIS. TUNIS WAS FIRST WITH 11 POINTS, LONDON SECOND WITH 25 POINTS, AND BARCELONA THIRD WITH 30 POINTS.

IN THE INDIVIDUAL PLACINGS, H. MHADHEB OF TUNISIA WAS THIRD AFTER GAMOUDI AND ARIZMENDI. FOURTH WAS M. BATTY OF ENGLAND, WITH F. AGUILAR OF SPAIN, FIFTH.
