  • Description

WHILE BRAZIL MOURNED, THE COUNTRY'S FORMER PRESIDENT, MARSHAL ARTHUR DA COSTA E SILVA, WAS BURIED IN RIO DE JANEIRO YESTERDAY (THURSDAY) WITH FULL MILITARY HONOURS.

THE 67-YEAR-OLD LEADER HAD BEEN PRESIDENT FROM MARCH, 1967, UNTIL HE SUFFERED A STROKE LAST AUGUST. HE DIED ON WEDNESDAY FOLLOWING A HEART ATTACK AT HIS HOME IN THE PRESIDENTIAL PALACE, WHERE HE HAD BEEN ALLOWED TO STAY.

PRESIDENT EMILIO GARRASTAZU MEDICI, THE ARMED FORCES CHOICE AS SUCCESSOR TO THE PRESIDENCY, IMMEDIATELY DECREED EIGHT DAYS OF NATIONAL MOURNING.

IN A MESSAGE TO THE NATION, PRESIDENT MEDICI DESCRIBED HIS PREDECESSOR AS A "GREAT BRAZILIAN" WHO HAD DEDICATED HIS LIFE TO THE SERVICE OF HIS COUNTRY.

COMMISSIONED IN 1921 COSTA E SILVA BECAME A GENERAL IN 1952. WHEN THE ARMY TOOK POWER HE BECAME MINISTER OF WAR, AND TWO YEARS LATER HE WAS NAMED A MARSHAL.

WHEN HE TOOK OFFICE AS PRESIDENT IN 1967, HE PLACED DEMOCRATIC GOVERNMENT HIGH AMONG HIS AIMS. BUT HIS HOPES OF A RETURN TO DEMOCRACY WERE DASHED BY A WAVE OF VIOLENCE AND ALLEGED SUBVERSION OF LEFT-WING ELEMENTS WHILE THE MILITARY RIGHT-WING FORCES PRESSED FOR A FURTHER CLAMP-DOWN ON CONGRESS AND CONSTITUTIONAL RIGHTS.

THE FORMER PRESIDENT LEAVES A WIDOW, YOLANDA, THE DAUGHTER OF AN ARMY GENERAL. THEIR ONLY SON, ALCIO, IS AN ARMY COLONEL.
