  • Description

JAPAN YESTERDAY (MONDAY) SUCCESSFULLY FIRED A THREE-STAGE 52FT (16.6 METRE) ROCKET FROM THE TOKYO UNIVERSITY AND OBSERVATION STATION AT OCHINOURA. REACHING A HEIGHT OF 1,335 MILES (2,150 KILOMETRES) THE ROCKET, A LAMBDA 3H3, SET A NEW HIGH-ALTITUDE RECORD FOR JAPAN.

THE LAMBDA ALSO REPRESENTS A BREAK-THROUGH IN SIZE FOR THE JAPANESE -- BEING THEIR BIGGEST YET. IT WAS EQUIPPED WITH TWO AUXILIARY ROCKETS SO THAT IT COULD GAIN ADDITIONAL ALTITUDE AND REMAIN IN ORBIT LONGER.

TOKYO UNIVERSITY IS AHEAD OF OTHER STILL UNCOORDINATED JAPANESE SPACE AGENCIES BECAUSE OF ITS EARLY START AFTER THE WAR AND ITS SKILL IN DEVELOPING CHEAP SOLID FUEL.

MONDAY'S LAUNCH IS ONE OF A SERIES DESIGNED TO GIVE EXPERIENCE FOR A SATELLITE ATTEMPT PROPER, TO BE MADE IN 1968.
