Background: Federal Nigeria authorities have implemented an emergency military training scheme to reinforce troops at present engaged in the civil war against the breakaway region of Eastern Nigeria - now calling itself Biafra.

At one of the largest military camps near Lagos, the Ikeja camp, two thousand young Nigerians are undergoing a short and intensive military training programme. The Head of the Federal Military Government, Major General Gowon, inspected the recruits yesterday (Saturday).

The Ikeja camp is the headquarters of the Sixth Battalion of the Nigeria Army. The trainees spend only a few weeks in the camp. Most have had no previous military experience.

During his review of the recruits Major General Gowon praised the young soldiers for their progress, and their willingness to fight in the civil conflict.
