Background: Of all the opposition spokesman being taken the most seriously is the former Senator and secretary general of the old Liberal Party...Jovito Salonga.

He appears to be the most plausible in an otherwise unremarkable group of men and women opposed to Marcos. Salonga is ??? currently in the limelight not only because of his opposition to Marcos and his referendum, but also because he is the lawyer to another former senator Benigno Aquino ??? who is currently at the centre of a military tribunal. Last month the military court sentenced Aquino to death. The case was re-opened following an order from Marcos but Aquino and Salonga have in the meantime taken the case the Supreme Court, arguing that the military should not hear the case. The Supreme Court has just ruled that the military should be restrained from hearing the case further. A victory for Salonga.

Salonga despairs of reaching the great ??? mass of Filipino people. "We're under a dictatorship". And says there is no free press or media in the country.

In 1971 Salonga was elected to a second term in the now disbanded senate with the highest margin of votes in Philippines history. The extent of that victory reflected a wave of sympathy following the grenade bombing of a Liberal Party rally at Manila's Plaza Miranda three months before the election. Ten people were killed and most of the opposition's eight senatorial candidates were injured. Salonga was one of them. His arms still bear deep shrapnel scars and he says more than one hundred steel fragments remain lodged in his body.

Salonga insists that a decision to hold another referendum instead of a proposed presidential election was a big letdown to the people. He claims the public has no interest in the referendum. He says...that even a great boxer like Mohammed Ali would be a terrific bore if his own promoter were to declare him lifetime heavyweight champion of the world without any opponent in the ring. (4 Referenda in 5 Yrs of MARTIAL LAW)
Salonga regards the interim assembly planned for next year as a precursor to the institution of what Marcos declares will be parliamentary democracy as very much up in the air.

Salonga and his other opposition colleagues have ??? the people to boycott the referendum rather than voting no. He says the referendum is farcical and a waste of money.

Salonga turned down an invitation to ??? put the oppositions case in a live national TV broadcast. He claimed that the reporters who would have been asking the questions and the programme moderator were all Marcos associates.

Interview divided up into two sections and ??? each make a separate story.

The first concerns views on the referendum and Marcos.

The last three minutes of the roll are taken up with Aquino case in light of yesterdays supreme court ruling that the military should be restrained from further hearing the case. Salonga here is speaking in his capacity as defence counsel for Aquino.
