The U.S. Air Force has announced that it will attempt to set seven new world speed and altitude records with the Lockheed SR-71 "Blackbird" during training missions from Beale Air Force Base, Calif., Tuesday, July 27.
Some of the records are presently held by the Russian MIG-25 Foxbat; others, by the earlier supersonic Lockheed YF-12A.
The SR-71 is the world's most advanced strategic reconnaissance aircraft, flying routinely at three times the speed of sound and able to survey 100,000 square miles of earth in an hour from high altitude.
The accompanying 16mm colour silent film of the SR-71 may be useful in connection with the USAF announcement that the records have been achieved.
The print runs one minute, seven seconds: 14 seconds, taxi; 12 seconds, takeoff; 41 seconds, flight.
