  • Description

At least two men died when an oil well caught fire during drilling operations in the Gulf of Mexico yesterday (Tuesday December 1). Sixty men were working on the platform when the blaze began and the survivors were picked up by helicopters and boats.

The platform stands in quite shallow water in Bay Marchand, about 65 miles (104 kilometres) south of New Orleans, and houses 22 producing wells.

The cause of the fire was not immediately known and official said there appeared to have been no oil spillage and that the 22 wells were equipped with safety devices to cut off the flow of oil automatically in such an emergency.
