  • Description

The Cyprus Government on Wednesday (28 August) began a major programme to find temporary homes for one-third of the island's population - before the onset of winter.

President Glafkos Clerides ordered construction teams in to the Larnaca and Limasol areas to build refugee camps. Thousands of refugees have huddled under trees and in makeshift shelters since the Turkish invasion began.

The official estimates of the number of displaced persons vary. The Cyprus Government says 200,000 Greek Cypriots have left their homes; the United Nations puts the number at around 150,000. It's also believed that a further 20,000 Turkish Cypriots are homeless.

Tents, latrines and shower blocks are quickly being erected at the new camp sites.

President Clerides told newsmen on Tuesday (27 August) steps had to be taken to alleviate distress and provide for the most urgent needs of the refugees. Families with children and old people would be dealt with first.
