Manchester... Portugal took advantage of two Bulgarian defensive mistakes on July 16th to beat Bulgaria 3-0 and take the lead in group three of the World Soccer Cup.
Portugal led 2-0 at halftime after Bulgarian fullback Ivan Vutzov headed a pass from Portuguese center forward Torres into his own goal at the seven minute mark, and Eusebio, in the 38th minute, took a pass inside the penalty box and hit a right footer past the Bulgarian goalie from ten yards out. Naidenov had a hand on the ball in his left hand corner, but could not stop it.
The third goal came ten minutes from the end when Portugal(s giant center forward Jose Torres intercepted a loose back pass from a Bulgarian defender to his goal keeper.
The win gave Portugal four points from two games and made them top favourites to qualify in the quarter finals. They must still play the reigning champions from Brazil who suffered an upset 3-1 loss at the hands of Hungary Friday. Brazil and Hungary both have two points, while Bulgaria is pointless. The Portuguese have scored three goals in each match and conceded only one, which gives them a goal average superior to all other teams in the group. For Brazil, it will mean a lopsided win over Portugal next Tuesday if they are going to make it to the semi finals.
The Portuguese showed clear superiority over Bulgaria in speed, attack and shooting. They controlled the game throughout, and showed skill in switching from defence to attack. Eusebio, apart from his goal, hit some tremendous drives that were just saved by the Bulgarian goalkeeper. Otherwise, the Bulgarians played below their form. Their forwards seemed too slow to beat the Portuguese defence, and their defence looked shaky throughout.
