  • Description

A JORDANIAN AIRLINER CRASHED IN FLAMES ONTO A HILLSIDE NEAR DAMASCUS ON SATURDAY NIGHT. FIFTY PASSENGERS, AND THE CREW OF FOUR WERE KILLED. THE AIRLINER WAS ON A FLIGHT FROM BEIRUT TO AMMAN AND CAIRO.

THE CAUSE OF THE CRASH REMAINS A MYSTERY. EYE-WITNESSES SAY THAT THE PLANE WAS ABLAZE BEFORE IT PLUNGED ONTO THE HILLSIDE.

THE PILOT HAD REPORTED TO DAMASCUS AIRPORT ONLY MINUTES EARLIER SAYING HE WAS ABOUT TO FLY OVER THE CITY.

OF THE DEAD, 47 WERE BELGIAN TOURISTS, TWO DUTCH AND ONE SWISS. THE CREW WERE ALL JORDANIAN.

IN THE LIGHT OF DAWN, RESCUE WORKERS CLIMBED UP TO WHERE THE CHARRED WRECKAGE LAY. ONLY THE TAIL OF THE PLANE -- A BRITISH BUILT DART HERALD -- WAS INTACT. STREWN THROUGHOUT THE WRECKAGE WERE PERSONAL BELONGINGS OF THE PASSENGERS -- A WOMAN'S SHOE, A PAIR OF EAR RINGS, A CLOTHES BRUSH......
MOST BODIES WERE SO BADLY BURNED THAT THEY COULD NOT BE IDENTIFIED. AN ARMED POLICEMAN STOOD GUARD OVER THE BODIES AS THEY WERE CAREFULLY BROUGHT FROM THE WRECKAGE.

OFFICIALS OF THE INTERNATIONAL CIVIL AIR ORGANISATION, AND JORDANIAN AIRLINE OFFICIALS ARE INVESTIGATING THE CRASH. THE DEAD CAPTAIN WAS THE AIRLINE'S CHIEF PILOT.
