  • Description

Culture modern and primitive combined in spectacular fashion at the New Britain annual show near Rabaul.

Amid age old ceremonials by highland tribes were stock car racing; soccer on motor bikes and dog jumping -- and all proved popular with the big crowd.

The show was opened at KOKOPO, 25 miles from Rabaul, by Mr John Guise; Speaker of the new Guinea House of Assembly.

After inspecting troops of the New Guinea regiment, the show got under way. Lufa dancers from the Eastern Highlands of New Guinea set a fast tempo with ceremonial parades and men from Chuave gave onlookers a taste of the primitive rituals of fierce tribesmen. Warriors of the Kainantu and Tari people also joined in traditional dances.

At the other end of the scale, highland bands heralded marching girls, stock cars and soccer contests on motor bikes. One car was deliberately rolled to demonstrate the advantages of safety belts.

Hundreds of people came from miles around for the show, which was organised by the New Guinea Agricultural and Horticultural Society.
