Background: Maulana Azad, one of India's leading men, died in Delhi in the early hours of Saturday. He was 69. Congress President for several years during the Independence movement, the Maulana was a great friend and trust lieutenant of Mr. Nehru. Hundreds of thousands of people started filing past the body as it lay in state at his residence. Mr. Nehru, greatly distressed, broke down several times. President Prasad, though himself sick, stayed at the house of his former friend and colleague and attended the funeral. Over 1 1/2 million people lined the route and the burial proceedings which conducted only with great difficulty because of the pressure of mourners.
