    TANZANIA'S UNION DAY CELEBRATIONS - MARKING THE SECOND ANNIVERSARY OF THE UNION OF TANGANYIKA AND ZANZIBAR -- WERE HIGHLIGHTED IN DAR-ES-SALAAM YESTERDAY (TUESDAY) WITH A HUGE PROCESSION TO THE NATIONAL STADIUM. A BIG CROWD ASSEMBLED IN THE STADIUM WATCHED THE PROCESSION, WHICH INCLUDED A MILITARY BAND, A MARCH-PAST BY TROOPS AT WHICH PRESIDENT NYERERE TOOK THE SALUTE, AND DANCERS AND MUSICIANS.

    THE PROCESSION BEGAN FROM THE OFFICES OF TANU -- THE TANGANYIKA AFRICAN NATIONAL UNION. AMONG THOSE AT THE STADIUM WERE PRESIDENT NYERERE, FIRST VICE KARUME AND SECOND VICE PRESIDENT KAWAWA. THE DAR-ES-SALAAM CELEBRATIONS WERE PARALLELED BY DANCES, GAMES AND FETES THROUGHOUT TANZANIA.

    ANOTHER ASPECT OF THE CELEBRATION IS THE AMNESTY DECLARED BY PRESIDENT NYERERE AND BENEFITTING NEARLY 11,000 PEOPLE. THEY INCLUDE 24 PRISONERS SENTENCED TO DEATH, WHO WILL HAVE THEIR SENTENCES COMMUTED TO LIFE IMPRISONMENT. SOME 5,200 SHORT-TERM PRISONERS WILL BE RELEASED IMMEDIATELY AND 750 LONG-TERM PRISONERS WILL ALSO QUALIFY FOR RELEASE. ANOTHER 5,000 PRISONERS WILL BENEFIT FROM ADDITIONAL REMISSION OF THEIR SENTENCES.
