Background: The first international rally for amphibious vehicles - the Porsche 'Schwimmwagen' Rally - was held July 23 at Burgou, on Lake Attersee, Austria. The 20 participants in this 5-day event demonstrated the use of the Volkswagen product by motoring over rough ground straight into the Lake. This novel method of transport was of great interest to the many sightseers present.
Professor Porsche constructed the Volkswagen-Schwimmwagen for use by the German army during the last war. Soon after the war, production ceased but a small number of them were still in good condition and run by enthusiasts in several countries. Main problem for the owners is to find all the spare parts.
Another rally was planned for next year on the Neuiedlersee near Vienna.
