  • Description

POLICE HAVE ARRESTED ABOUT 120 PEOPLE DURING TWO CONSECUTIVE DAYS OF RACIAL VIOLENCE IN THE BAYSIDE COMMUNITY OF RICHMOND, NEAR SAN FRANCISCO. A CURFEW HAS BEEN IN FORCE SINCE LAST NIGHT (THURSDAY).

BOMBINGS AND GUNFIRE CAME TO RICHMOND AFTER THE SHOOTING LAST TUESDAY NIGHT (JUNE 25) OF A 15-YEAR-OLD NEGRO YOUTH BY POLICE. THE DISTURBANCES SHIFTED OUT OF THE GHETTO AREA AND INTO THE CITY. RIOT POLICE WERE CALLED IN FROM SAN FRANCISCO AND NEARBY COMMUNITIES TO CONTROL THE SITUATION.

THERE WERE AT LEAST 20 FIRES IN THE DOWNTOWN AREA. ONE OF THEM CAUSED DAMAGE ESTIMATED AT ONE-MILLION U.S. DOLLARS TO A FURNITURE STORE. IT WAS BELIEVED TO HAVE BEEN STARTED BY FIVE MOLOTOV COCKTAILS THROWN BY THE CROWDS. OTHER STORES HAD WINDOWS SMASHED AND MANY WERE LOOTED.

THERE WERE NO DEATHS BUT AT LEAST 12 PEOPLE WERE INJURED. SCATTERED SNIPER FIRE KEPT POLICE ON THE ALERT AND ABOUT 400 OF THEM WERE PATROLLING THE STREETS IN THE SEARCH FOR VIOLATORS OF THE CURFEW. AS DAWN APPROACHED, POLICE HAD THE SITUATION WELL ENOUGH IN HAND TO CALL OFF A REQUEST FOR ASSISTANCE FROM NATIONAL GUARDSMEN.
