    Police broke up demonstrations by students in the centre of Athens capital of Greece, on Friday (November 16th), and then crack troops used tanks to break into the Polytechnic with the students had been occupying for three days. At least three students were killed and President Papadopoulos declared material law the following day - imposing a strict curfew, press censorship and a ban on gatherings of more than five people. He described the demonstrators as 'anarchist element's and said they were trying to prevent the elections planned for next year.

    SYNOPSIS: Militant Greek students and their supporters gathered outside the Polytechnic on Friday for one of their attempts to march on Constitution Square in the centre of Athens.. The students had been occupying the Polytechnic since Wednesday in what started as a demand for academic freedom and ended as a violent anti-government protest.

    Shortly after this gathering, police moved in to disperse the demonstrators with tear gas and baton charges. Then armoured troops smashed into the Polytechnic and cleared out five thousand students. At least three students have been killed. President Papadopoulos has called the demonstrations the work of 'anarchist elements' and has declared martial law.
