    SIX PEOPLE ARE BELIEVED TO HAVE BEEN KILLED EARLY TODAY (FRIDAY) WHEN AN EXPLOSION RIPPED THROUGH THE PANAMANIAN TANKER AGUA CLARA IN ROTTERDAM.

    ALL THE DEAD ARE REPORTED TO HAVE BEEN CLEANERS, WORKING IN THE SHIP'S TANKS.

    ELEVEN OTHER PEOPLE WERE SERIOUSLY INJURED IN THE BLAST, WHICH RIPPED A GAPING HOLE IN THE TANKER'S PORT BOW.

    THE DEAD WERE TRAPPED IN THE TANK IN WHICH THEY WERE WORKING, AND IT TOOK RESCUE WORKERS MORE THAN FIVE HOURS TO REACH THEM.

    THE SHIP, OF 23-THOUSAND TONS WAS MANNED BY A CREW OF 53 AND THE CLEANING STAFF WHEN THE BLAST OCCURRED. SEVERAL PEOPLE JUMPED OR WERE FLUNG INTO THE WATER DURING THE EXPLOSION.
