To date Fittipaldi has own three and Regazzoni one.
Also in the running is South African drive Jody Scheckter, who has 45 points. To take the crown he must win the race, with Fittipaldi and Regazzoni finishing worse than fifth.
Fittipaldi is driving a Marlboro Texaco McLaren, Clay Regazzoni a Ferrari and Shceckter an Elf Team Tyrrel.
During practice for the Grand Prix on Friday (4 October) Mario Andretti of the United States set a new lap record in his Parnelli Ford with a time of one minute 39,209 seconds on the 3.377-mile (6.06721-kms) course.
Jean-Pierre Beltoise crashed his BRM P201 into a guard rail during the practice session. He escaped with a sprained ankle. But the car was damaged beyond repair and the team has no back-up car.
SYNOPSIS: The prospective champions following each tour round the circuit in practice. Fittipaldi says the Untied Sates' Grand Prix will be one of the most difficult races of his career. During practice, American drive Mario Andretti set a new lap record in his Parnelli Ford with a speed of one-minute-thirty-nine-point-two-zero-nine seconds.
Jody Scheckter out on the circuit in his Tyrell. Getting acclimatised for a race which will, for him too, be a gruelling test. In one season he had emerged as the only driver capable of challenging Fittipaldi and Regazzoni.
