Background: World motorcycle champion Kenny Roberts of the U.S.A. has won the last major international event of the British racing season -- the Race of the Year. Roberts, who led throughout the race, beat his closest challenger by full six and a half seconds.
SYNOPSIS: This year's event was the twenty-first running of the Race of the Year. However, this was the first time it had been held at Oulton Park.
The most likely challenge to Roberts was thought to be British rider Barry Sheene. Sheene however did well just to finish the race -- he was still in pain from the broken right collar bone he suffered in practice during last weekend's Nation's Cup Series in Italy.
Last year Sheene did win this race by narrowly beating out his arch rival Wil Hartog.
Roberts has already won the World 500cc Championship, and in this race, right from the start he was eager to be the first across the finish line.
Roberts clocked the fastest lap on his way to the win. He drove his Yamaha at the incredible speed of 166 kilometres per hour (103 m.p,h.). So, in order, Roberts of the U.S., Sheene of Great Britain, and Sayle of Australia.
