In South Africa, mrs. Winnie Mandela, wife of imprisoned Black nationalist Nelson Mandela, has decided to appeal against two six-month suspended jail sentences she received this week for breaking her Government banning order. Forty-three-year-old Mrs. Mandela has been restricted to Brandfort in the Orange Free State since last May. She appeared in the Bloemfontein Magistrates Court on Thursday (9 February).
SYNOPSIS: Dozens of interested spectators, black and white, gathered outside the court before the start of the trial, and Mrs. Mandela took time off to chat to well-wishers. The two charges she faced hinged on her having received an unauthorised visit from friends and relatives, and having held a conversation with two neighbours. Also present at the trial was Winnie Mandela's daughter, Zindzi. Magistrate Chris Steytler suspended both six-month sentences for four years.
By the time the trial had ended, a large crowd of blacks had gathered outside, and as Mrs. Mandela and her lawyers came out, the onlookers started chanting and giving Black Power salutes. Zinzi Mandela was approached for her comments.
