  • Description

THERE WAS A STANDING OVATION FOR MR. WILSON, PRIME MINISTER AND LEADER OF THE PARTY, AT THE LABOUR PARTY CONFERENCE AT BRIGHTON TODAY (SATURDAY). ELEVEN HUNDRED DELEGATES APPLAUDED FOR MORE THAN THREE MINUTES.

OPENING THE CONFERENCE, CHAIRMAN MR. ANTHONY GREENWOOD MADE AN APPEAL FOR UNITY WITHIN THE PARTY. THERE WAS SO MUCH AT STAKE, HE SAID. MANY DELEGATES WERE EXPECTING PARTY LEFT-WINGERS TO CHALLENGE THE PRIME MINISTER OVER HIS WASHINGTON TALKS. BUT MR. GREENWOOD SAID HISTORY WOULD NOT LIGHTLY FORGIVE ANY LEFTWINGERS WHO MADE THE GOVERNMENT'S TASK HARDER -- OR ITS LIFE SHORTER.

MR. WILSON'S SPEECH WAS THE HIGHLIGHT OF THE DAY. ON THE GOVERNMENT'S NARROW MAJORITY: HE SAID IT WOULD NOT BE ALLOWED IT INTERFERE WITH THE DUTIES OF GOVERNMENT -- NO DECISIONS WOULD BE TRIMMED; ON INDUSTRY: THERE WAS NO ROOM FOR 'LUDDITES' IN UNIONS OR BOARDROOM; ON DEFENCE: EXPENDITURE WOULD BE STRICTLY RELATED TO WHAT BRITAIN CAN AFFORD; ON WASHINGTON NEGOTIATIONS: MR. WILSON DENIED NEWSPAPER SPECULATION THAT A SECRET PLEDGE HAD BEEN GIVEN TO PRESIDENT JOHNSON PROMISING THAT BRITAIN WOULD TAKE PART IN MIXED-MANNED SURFACE FLEET.

MR. WILSON SPOKE TO THE DELEGATES:
