Background: Visnews filmed Jan 30 the reception in Beirut of the United Arab Republic's Minister of Economy Abdul Mon'em Kaissouny at the beginning of the first official visit between the UAR and the Lebanon since November 1956.

    M. Kaissouny was received by Government officials at the Syrian border. In Beirut he called at the Presidential Palace, signed the visitors' register, then conferred with Prime Minister Rashid karami. Later he saw the Minister of Foreign Affairs, M. Haj Hassan Owaini.

Political observers on Mid-East affairs noted the visit comes when the Lebanese Government is preparing improved relations with UAR. One of the outcomes is expected to be an invitation to UAR President Nasser to visit the Lebanon.

    M. Kaissouny was specifically expected to deal in his talks with ways to bring about an end of antagonism between Syria and the Lebanon. The antagonism, sporadic for many years, became persistently bitter while Camille Chamoun was President of the Lebanon.

    M. Kaissouny came to Beirut from Damascus where he had been helping a reforms committee appointed by President Nasser to remedy the discontent in Syria on the effects of union with Egypt nearly a year ago.
