  • Description

Pjotr Smirnow, a 32-year-old Russian student was put aboard a Russian aircraft at Amsterdam's Schiphol airport, July 7, by Dutch military police, after he had been accused for spying for the USSR. He was accompanied by his wife and four-year-old son.

He was arrested after West German authorities informed the Dutch that they had arrested a 25-year-old East German who stated Smirnow had asked him to make contact with a female secretary in the Dutch Security Service. The East German was to seek information from the Dutch Security worker and persuade her to visit Berlin.

On receiving this information, Dutch police kept a close watch on Smirnow, but it was some time before they collected enough evidence to make the arrest. Police then discovered that the Russian intended to leave the country as his wife expected a child and wanted it to be born in the Soviet Union. When his personal possessions went to the Russian Embassy, the Dutch authorities arrested him.

Smirnow denied everything, claiming that he was never in contact with the East German agent. Unable to prove their spying charge, the Dutch authorities decided to expel Smirnow.
