  • Description

CHAMPION LONG-DISTANCE RUNNER, ALFRED NKANDU, SCORED A RUNAWAY WIN IN THE ZAMBIAN CROSS-COUNTRY CHAMPIONSHIP AT LUANSHYA ON SUNDAY (MARCH 30). NKANDU, 24, RACED TO THE FRONT AT THE START AND STAYED THERE ALL THE WAY.

NKANDU STARTED THE RACE AS FAVOURITE, FOLLOWING THE WITHDRAWAL OF 1968 TITLEHOLDER, DOUGLAS SINKALA.

THE WIN WAS A GREAT COMEBACK FOR NKANDU, WHO HAS BEEN IN PARTIAL LIMBO SINCE HE LAST HELD THE TITLE IN 1965.

HE RAN THE 12-THOUSAND METRES (7 1/2 MILES) IN 40 MINUTES 55.5 SECONDS. NKANDU, RUNNING FOR RHOKANA PARK HARRIERS, WON BY MORE THAN 41 SECONDS FROM BENSON MULOMBA, OF LUSAKA CITY AC, WHO WAS UNABLE TO MATCH NKANDU'S FORCING PACE PAST THE HALF-WAY MARK.

IN FACT, AFTER THE THREE-AND-A-HALF MILE MARK, THE RACE WAS A VIRTUAL NO CONTEST.

THIRD WAS E. MULONDE (ARMY A) WITH A TIME OF 42.18.
