Background: TO FORGET THE COLD WAR FOR A MOMENT... AT MADISON SQUARE GARDEN IN NEW YORK CITY, AMERICAN AND SOVIET SPORTSMEN BATTLED OUT ONE OF THEIR CLOSEST CONTESTS ON THURSDAY.

TWO RUSSIAN BASKETBALL TEAMS WERE OPENING THEIR FOURTH SERIES OF MATCHES AGAINST THE UNITED STATES WITH A TOUR OF THE US ARRANGED AS PART OF THE CULTURAL EXCHANGE PROGRAMME BETWEEN THE TWO COUNTRIES.

A CROWD OF THREE THOUSAND WATCHED THE "DOUBLE HEADER" (TWO MATCHES ON THE ONE PROGRAMME). IN THE WOMEN'S MATCH, HELD FIRST, THE SOVIET UNION DEFEATED THE UNITED STATES BY 59 POINTS TO 57, AFTER OVERTIME PLAY; AND IN THE MEN'S MATCH, THE US DEFEATED RUSSIA BY 70 POINTS TO 66.

IN THE WOMEN'S CONTEST, THE NASHVILLE BUSINESS COLLEGE, TENNESSEE, REPRESENTED THE UNITED STATES. THEY TOOK THE LEAD AT HALF TIME - 24 POINTS TO 20 - BUT A YOUNG TALL SOVIET GIRL (6 FT. 2 INS), SKAYDRITE SMILDZINIA, LATER PROVED TO BE TOO MUCH FOR THE AMERICANS. SHE COLLECTED 25 POINTS AND GRABBED 20 REBOUNDS, MORE THAN ANYONE ELSE. THE TOP AMERICAN WOMAN WAS DORIS ROGERS, WITH 17 POINTS.

IN THE MEN'S MATCH, THE SOVIET UNION'S NATIONAL TEAM FACED AN AMERICAN SQUAD CHOSEN FROM THE TOP AMERICAN TEAMS.

THE AMERICANS TOOK AN EARLY LEAD BUT THE SOVIET UNION BOUNCED BACK TO GAIN A HALF TIME TIE. HOWEVER, PLAY WAS OFTEN RAGGED, BALLHANDLING WAS POOR AND THE SHOOTING SLOPPY. THE RUSSIANS - TAKING GOOD ADVANTAGE OF THEIR HEIGHT - WERE SUPERIOR IN REBOUNDING.

HIGH SCORER OF THE GAME WAS 6 FT. 10 IN. ALEX PETROV, WITH 15 POINTS, AND THE TOP AMERICAN WAS JERRY SHIPP, WITH 14 POINTS. THE AMERICANS PRESERVED THEIR RECORD OF NEVER HAVING LOST A NATIONAL MATCH AGAINST THE SOVIET UNION.
