  • Description

Senior Lebanese politicians including the Prime Minister, Mr. Rashid Karami, and the leader of the right-wing Phalangist Party, M. Pierre Gemayel, have been in Cario for talks on finding a solution to the Lebanese civil war.
Mr. Gemayel held talks with Egyptian Foreign Minister, Mr. Ismail Fahmy, at the Foreign Ministry in Cairo on Tuesday (14 September). The Phalangist leader had recently returned from the Syrian capital, Damascus, where he had talks with President Hafez al-Assad about the situation in Lebanon. The Syrian have more than ten thousand soldiers in Lebanon, but have recently been seeking a political solution to the civil war.
At the village of Mit Abdul Kom, the Lebanese Prime Minister, Mr. Karami discussed the civil war with President Anwar Sadat. He had earlier had talks with Egyptian Prime Minister, Mr. Mamdouh Salem, and Foreign Minister, Mr. Fahmy. Mr. Karami has also recently visited Damascus for talks with President Assad. Diplomatic sources said the Lebanese leaders are apparently seeking Egyptian involvement in any Lebanese peace settlement. The leader of the Progressive Socialist Party, M. Kamal Jumblatt, is also expected in Cairo after Mr. Elias Sarkis becomes President to Lebanon on 23 September. Mr. Jumblatt is one of the leaders of the left-wing forces in Lebanon.
Prime Minister Karami's earlier talks with the Egyptian Prime Minister and Foreign Minister had been held at the Council of Minister's offices. Thousands of people have been killed in the civil war since it began 17 months ago. Syria, which entered the war in support of right-wing Christian forces, has recently been the scene of intensive negotiations aimed at finding a peaceful solution. Syria apparently wanted a solution before Mr. Sarkis was elected President.
