  • Description

POLLING BEGAN TODAY IN THE SWEDISH GENERAL ELECTIONS. RESULTS ARE NOT EXPECTED UNTIL MONDAY, BUT FIRST INDICATIONS SHOW A SMALL LOSS OF SEATS BY THE RULING SOCIAL DEMOCRATS.

THE PRIME MINISTER, MR. TAGE ERLANDER, WAS AN EARLY VOTER IN STOCKHOLM. AT SOME POLLING STATIONS THERE WERE, QUEUES, BUT IN GENERAL POLLING WAS ONLY MODERATE.

SWEDES ARE VOTING TO ELECT 233 MEMBERS TO THE LOWER HOUSE OF THE RIKSDAG (PARLIAMENT.) IN THE NEW PARLIAMENT THERE WILL BE ONE MORE SEAT THAN BEFORE BECAUSE OF ADMINISTRATIVE CHANGES. IN THE OLD HOUSE, THE SOCIAL DEMOCRATS HAD 114 SEATS AND THE MAIN OPPOSITION PARTIES HAD 113 -- LIBERALS 40, CONSERVATIVES 39 AND CENTRE PARTY 34. THE BALANCE WAS HELD BY THE COMMUNISTS WITH FIVE SEATS BUT THEY NEVER VOTED AGAINST THE SOCIAL DEMOCRAT GOVERNMENT, WHICH HAS BEEN IN POWER FOR 32 YEARS. MR. ERLANDER, WHO IS 63, HAS BEEN PRIME MINSTER FOR 18 YEARS.

A FACTOR EXPECTED TO REDUCE THE STRENGTH OF THE MAIN PARTIES IS THE PRESENCE OF A NEW PARTY, THE CHRISTIAN DEMOCRATIC ASSEMBLY, WHICH PUT UP CANDIDATES IN MORE THAN HALF OF THE COUNTRY'S ELECTORAL DIVISIONS. THE PARTY WAS FORMED A FEW MONTHS AGO, PLEDGED TO REVIVE EMPHASIS ON CHRISTIAN VALUES IN MODERN LIFE.
