Background: INTRODUCTION: The trial of the former Japanese Prime Minister, Mr. Kakuei Tanaka, began on Thursday (27 January) in the spotlight of world-wide press attention and unprecedented public interest.

SYNOPSIS: Mr. Tanaka was to appear before the Tokyo District Court on charges of taking a one-and-a-half million dollar bribe from the Lockheed Aircraft Corporation. The street outside the court was packed with newsmen, cameramen, and spectators. Mr. Tanaka was the first of the five defendant to arrive for the hearing. His former secretary, Toshio Enomoto, arrived shortly afterwards. Mr. Tanaka resigned as Prime Minister in disgrace in 1974.

The other defendants were three former executives of the Marubeni Corporation, which was once Lockheed's agent in Japan. The Corporation's former Chairman, Hiro Hiyama, and two former directors, Hiroshi Itoh, and Toshiharu Okubo, have all been charged with bribery, perjury and violating Japan's foreign exchange control laws.

Although his secretary is charged with having physically handled the Lockheed money, Mr. Tanaka could face up to five years in jail and forfeit the alleged bribery money. The case which took the Government one year to investigate, will be presented by four prosecutors.

During the first day's hearing, there was an emotional scene in the court when Mr. Tanaka wept openly as he denied that he had received any money from the Lockheed Corporation. All five defendants pleaded not guilty.
