Background: INTRODUCTION: King Juan Carlos of Spain won an assurance of West German support for his country's entry to the European Economic Community (EEC) when he began a stage visit in Bonn on Tuesday (19 April).

SYNOPSIS: For King Juan Carlos and Queen Sofia, it was their first state visit to West Germany. West Germany President Walter Scheel was at the military aircraft new Bonn to welcome the royal couple who were accompanied by Foreign Minister Marcelino Oreja. The King's special plane had been escorted by four West German Air Force jets from the border to the airport.

The guests were greeted with 21-gun salute and full military honours. The visit of the 39-year-old Spanish King comes little more than a week after his government legalised the Communist Party. West German officials said Spain's development away from dictatorship would bot have been possible without the initiative taken by Juan Carlos.

Later Spain's entry to the Common Market was discussed at Villa Hammerschmidt, the Rhineside residence of President Walter Scheel. The luncheon was a private affair for the King and Queen and the Scheels.

But at another luncheon for the Spanish Foreign Minister, his West German counterpart Hans-Dietrich Genscher said his country was supporting Spain's aim of becoming a member of the European community. Herr Genscher pledged help in solving problems that might arise if Spain enters the EEC.
