"NIMROD", WHICH HAS BEEN NAMED AFTER THE BIBLICAL CHARACTER NIMROD - THE "MIGHTY HUNTER", HAS BEEN CONSTRUCTED AT THE NUCLEAR RESEARCH ESTABLISHMENT AT CHILTON IN BERKSHIRE, U.K.

    THE NEW MACHINE IS ONE OF FOUR IN WESTERN EUROPE THAT IS CAPABLE OF ACCELERATING ATOMIC PARTICLES TO ENERGIES WHICH CORRESPOND TO MORE THAN ONE HUNDRED THOUSAND MILLION VOLTS. THE LARGEST OF THESE IS AT GENEVA IS SWITZERLAND.

    THE VILLAGE OF CHILTON HAS SUDDENLY BOOMED INTO A THRIVING CENTRE. THE ESTABLISHMENT ALONE EMPLOYS ALMOST A THOUSAND PEOPLE. THE EQUIPMENT WAS ALL DESIGNED AT THE CENTRE. ONE COMPLETELY NEW DEVICE DEVELOPED HERE IS AS "SPARK CHAMBER" WHICH MARKS AND RECORDS AUTOMATICALLY ELECTRIFIED PLATES.

    "NIMROD" COST MORE THAN ELEVEN MILLION POUNDS TO BUILD. COMMENTING ON ITS COST, MR. QUINTIN HOGG SAID THAT "IN ANY GENERATION BEFORE THE PRESENT WE SHOULD HAVE BEEN CONSIDERED MAD." HE POINTED OUT THAT THE ACQUISITION OF KNOWLEDGED FOR ITS OWN SAKE WAS ESSENTIAL TO THE WELL-BEING OF CIVILISED COUNTRY.....
