    STARTING AT BLACKPOOL, THE RACE COVERS 1,400 MILES IN 13 DAYS AND OFFERS PRIZES WORTH GBP3,500. CHALLENGING BRITAIN'S 65 ENTRANTS IN FIVE TEAMS WERE RIDERS FROM POLAND, CZECHOSLOVAKIA, SPAIN, YUGOSLAVIA, AND ACO??? SCANDINAVIAN TEAM FROM DENMARK AND FINLAND.

    MOST STRONGLY FANCIED RIDER WAS BRITAIN'S BILLY HOLMES, WINNER OF LAST YEAR'S RACE. BILL BRADLEY (BRITAIN) AND JUAN URIBEZUBIA (SPAIN) WERE EXPECTED TO BE STRONG CHALLENGERS.

    WINNER OF THE FIRST STAGE, 103 MILES FROM BLACKPOOL TO RHYL, WAS KEN NUTTALL (BRITAIN) WITH HOLMES SECOND. TIME: 4 HOURS 4 MINUTES AND 20 SECONDS.

    THICK CROWDS OFTEN LINED THE SECOND STAGE, 143 MILES THROUGH THE MIDLANDS FROM RHYL TO CHELTENHAM. WITH A BEAUTIFULLY JUDGED FINAL SPIRIT, JOHN CLAREY OF BRITAIN WON NARROWLY FROM SCANDINAVIA'S JORGEN HANSEN. POLAND WERE LEADING IN THE TEAM RACE.
