  • Description

THE AMERICAN RACING DRIVER, WALTER HANSGEN, WAS IN A CRITICAL CONDITION IN HOSPITAL TONIGHT (SATURDAY) AFTER CRASHING DURING TRIALS FOR THE LE MANS 24-HOURS SPORTS CAR RACE IN JUNE.

HANSGEN WAS INJURED WHEN HIS SEVEN LITRE FORD PROTOTYPE HURTLED INTO A SAND BANK AT AN ESTIMATED 100 MILES AN HOUR. IT TOOK TWENTY MINUTES FOR RESCUERS TO FREE HANSGEN FROM HIS WRECKED CAR.

THE INJURED AMERICAN WAS TAKEN BY HELICOPTER TO A MILITARY HOSPITAL AT ORLEANS, SIXTY MILES FROM LE MANS, THIS AFTERNOON.

JUST BEFORE HIS ACCIDENT HANSGEN HAD RECORDED THAT FASTEST TRIAL TIME - 132 MILES AN HOUR. LATER, HIS TIME WAS BEATEN BY JOHN WHITMORE OF BRITAIN WHO CLOCKED 136.12 MILES AN HOUR ON ONE LAP OF 8.39 MILE COURSE.

AMERICAN FORDS ARE STRONGLY CHALLENGING ITALIAN FERRARIS IN THE RACE. FERRARIS DID NOT TAKE PART IN TODAY'S TRIALS BECAUSE THE PROTOTYPES HAVE NOT BEEN COMPLETED.

THE RACE WILL BE RUN BETWEEN JUNE 18 AND 19.
