  • Description

THE LARGEST AIRBORNE GEOPHYSICAL SURVEY EVER UNDERTAKEN IS BEING CARRIED OUT FOR THE DIRECTORATE GENERAL OF MINERAL RESOURCES OF SAUDI ARABIA BY A CONSORTIUM OF FIRMS INCLUDING HUNTING GEOLOGY AND GEOPHYSICS OF GREAT BRITAIN. AT THE COMPANY'S HEADQUARTERS, NEAR LONDON, A VAST MOSAIC OF AERIAL PHOTOGRAPHS IS BEING STUDIED BY EXPERTS, WHO WILL FINALLY SUBMIT TO SAUDI ARABIA GEOPHYSICAL MAPS PINPOINTING THE MOST LIKELY AREAS FOR THE DEVELOPMENT OF MINERAL RESOURCES.

THE SURVEY, WHICH BEGAN IN OCTOBER 1965, COVERS NEARLY 120,000 SQUARE MILES OF THE PRE-CAMBRIAN SHIELD ZONE NORTH OF JEDDAH. THE AREA IS COMPOSED MAINLY OF DESERT ALTERNATING WITH THE CRATERS OF EXTINCT VOLCANOES, AND THE AERIAL PHOTOGRAPHS GIVE THE IMPRESSION OF A LUNAR LANDSCAPE.

THE COMPLETED MAPS WILL BE USED AS A GUIDE BY GEOLOGISTS SURVEYING THE GROUND ITSELF.
