  • Description

United States President Nixon and Mexico's President Gustavo Diaz Ordaz have reached a comprehensive agreement ending more than a century of squabbling between the two countries over territorial claims along the Rio Grande.

The two Presidents announced the agreement at a surprise press conference called at the end of a day of meetings in Puerto Vallarta on president Nixon's first state visit to Latin America. On his arrival in Mexico President Nixon paid tribute to President Ordaz.

The erratic and meandering Rio Grande has cause administrative uncertainties and disputes over sovereignty for more than a century, but the new agreement solves these problems and includes a formula to solve any boundary dispute which might arise in the future.

President Nixon made the flying 27-hour visit to Mexico specifically for talks with President Ordaz and it is his first and only scheduled foreign visit this year.

During their talks the two presidents also discussed the control off narcotics into the United States from across the Mexican border.
