    Background: The F-100 "Supersabre"
has retired from the war. For past six years U. S. Air Force F-100 Supersabres
have been engaged in interdiction and close support missions in Southeast Asia.

The 35th Tactical Fighter Wing (TFW) with four assigned Tactical Fighter
Squadrons containing the last F-100's in Southeast Asia commenced standdown on
25 June in preparation for the Wing's inactivation, scheduled for the latter
part of July. All F-100's assigned to the wing will redeploy during July to the
United States. Inactivation of the wing will result in a reduction of
approximately 1700 Air Force spaces in the Republic of Vietnam.

At one time there were 15 F-100 squadrons in Vietnam, including four Air
National Guard units. Now the last F-100 unit in Southeast Asia, the 35th TFW is
coming home from its base at Phan Rang. Since its arrival in Vietnam in 1966,
the 35 TFW has taken part in every major campaign, flown over 214, 850 combat
sorties and been awarded three Air Force Outstanding Unit Awards, the Vietnamese
Gallantry Cross with Palm and the Daedalian Maintenance Award for 1968.

The wing's F-100s will be assigned to USAF Air National Guard Units. Prior to
their departure from Vietnam, the aircraft were completely gone over, repainted
    and put in top condition.

The 35th TFW itself will be inactivated. Two of its squadrons, the 352nd and the
615th will inactivate with the wing while the remaining two squadrons, the 612th
and 614th will transfer their designations to other USAF units.
