    DURING FOUR DAYS OF TALKS, THE ESKIMOS WILL BE DISCUSSING THE FUTURE OF THEIR RACE WITH ADMINISTRATORS, INTERNATIONAL ARCTIC EXPERTS AND BUSINESSMEN. CALLED THE INTERNATIONAL CONGRESS ON ARCTIC DEVELOPMENT AND THE FUTURE OF ESKIMO SOCIETIES, THE CONFERENCE IS BEING ATTENDED BY AVER 70 DELEGATES.

    PRIME MOVER BEHIND THE CONFERENCE IS THE EMINENT FRENCH ECOLOGIST, PROFESSOR JEAN MALAURIE, WHO EXPLAINED THAT THE FUTURE OF THE ESKIMO CIVILISATION HAD TAKEN ON ADDED SIGNIFICANCE SINCE THE DISCOVERY OF RICH OIL AND MINERAL DEPOSITS IN THE ARCTIC. IT WAS THE RESPONSIBILITY OF INDUSTRIALISED NATIONS BENEFITTING FROM THIS NATURAL WEALTH OF THE ARCTIC TO HELP THE NATIVE POPULATION.

    AMONG THE MAJOR THEMES ON THE CONFERENCE AGANDA ARE THE LAND OWNERSHIP RIGHTS OF THE ESKIMOS AND THEIR PARTICIPATION IN LOCAL ADMINISTRATION.

    THE SOVIET UNION, DENMARK, CANADA AND THE UNITED STATES - ALL REPRESENTED AT THE CONFERENCE - WERE URGED TO SET UP A JOINT COMMITTEE TO STUDY THE ECONOMIC AND CULTURAL DEVELOPMENT OF THE ESKIMO RACE DURING THE OPENING SESSION.
