  • Description

The Chinese New Year of the OX was welcomed in Hongkong with unseasonably warm sunshine at the weekend, considered by many to be a good omen for the coming year.

Thousands flocked to the Taoist temples to have their fortunes told, some by the universal palm-reading method and others by chim-tung, the Chinese traditional cylinder of sticks, where it is shaken until is forced out. This stick is then read (all the sticks bear particular characters for death, fortune, happiness, longevity, etc) as being the fortune for the one for whom the cylinder was shaken.

The temple in the film is the Sik Yuen at Wong Tai Sin in New Kowloon.

Others went to the temples to pray (please check on Taoism in encyclopedia; unable learn much at this stage).

Although the Chinese observe five major festivals of their calender, the New Year is the biggest.
