  • Description

THERE WAS A BIG PROCESSIONS THROUGH THE STREETS OF DAR ES SALAAM ON WEDNESDAY (25 MAY 66) TO MARK AFRICA FREEDOM DAY, THE THIRD ANNIVERSARY OF THE FOUNDING OF THE ORGANISATION OF AFRICAN UNITY.

THERE WERE CELEBRATIONS THROUGHOUT AFRICA TO MARK THE ANNIVERSARY. THE O.A.U. CAME INTO BEING AT AN AFRICAN SUMMIT CONFERENCE IN ADDIS ABABA IN 1963.

IN THE TANZANIA CAPITAL, EXILES FROM RHODESIA, SOUTH AFRICA AND THE PORTUGUESE TERRITORIES JOINED IN A PARADE. THERE WERE PLACARDS, AND MILITARY AND POLICE BANDS. TRIBESMEN PERFORMED SOME OF TANZANIA'S TRADITIONAL DANCES.

LATER A BIG CROWD ASSEMBLED TO HEAR THE ZAMBIAN VICE PRESIDENT, MR. KAMANGA, SPEAK ON THE RHODESIAN SITUATION. HE CONDEMNED BOTH BRITAIN AND THE O.A.U. FOR FAILING TO BRING AN END TO MR. IAN SMITH'S ILLEGAL REGIME.

MR. JAMES HADABE, ONE OF THE LEADERS OF SOUTH AFRICA'S BANNED AFRICAN NATIONAL CONGRESS, WAS THERE DANCING WITH THE CROWD. THERE WERE ALSO SEVERAL REPRESENTATIVES OF THE UNITED NATIONS COMMITTEE ON COLONIALISM, WHICH IS CURRENTLY MEETING IN DAR ES SALAAM.
