  • Description

AN AMATEUR PILOT, FLYING A RENTED LIGHT PLANE, MADE A CRASH-LANDING ON THE ROADWAY OF THE GEORGE WASHINGTON SUSPENSION BRIDGE OVER THE HUDSON RIVER IN NEW YORK YESTERDAY (SUNDAY). THE PILOT AND HIS PASSENGER SUFFERED ONLY MINOR INJURIES.

ALTHOUGH THE BRIDGE IS AMONG THE LARGEST AND BUSIN BUSIEST IN THE WORLD, THE PILOT, 19-YEAR-OLD PHILLIP IPPOLITO, OF NEW YORK, MANAGED TO LAND CLEAR OF TRAFFIC. HOWEVER, A WING-TIP HIT A TRUCK AND THE TWO-SEATER AIRCRAFT SPUN AROUND AND WAS BADLY DAMAGE. THE TRUCK WAS NOT AFFECTED GREATLY, NOR WAS THE DRIVER HURT.

IPPOLITO SAID HE WAS FLYING AT 2,500 FEET (762 METRES) WHEN THE PLANE DEVELOPED ENGINE TROUBLE. IT WAS THE FIRST TIME A PLANE HAD EVER LANDED ON THE THREE-QUARTER MILE SPAN (1 KM.), ALTHOUGH SEVERAL AIRCRAFT HAVE BEEN KNOWN TO FLY UNDER IT. THE BRIDGE ROADWAY STANDS 450 (137 METRES) FEET ABOVE THE RIVER, LINKING UPPER MANHATTAN WITH SUBURBAN AREAS IN NEW JERSEY.

AND IPPOLITO'S REASON FOR LANDING ON THE BRIDGE AND NOT IN THE HUDSON?---- HIS PASSENGER, 39-YEAR-OLD JOSEPH BRENNAN, COULD NOT SWIM.
