LON NOL, THROUGH INTERPRETER: "The most important one....inaudible..... this is to solve the economic problem that face my country and government."

DAVIS: "So it is to solve the economic question that is the major problem?"

INTERPRETER: "It's not the ideal economy....the main problem is to join together....because social and economic must go along together."

The community development project -- shown in this film -- is an example of this. For the villagers, in addition to being given a model centre, are also being granted land titles -- the first they've ever had.

Background: Khmer Republic leader Marshal Lon Nol, who took over as head of state on Friday (March 10), gave an exclusive interview to Visnews South Ea Asia reporter Neil Davis earlier in the week. The 58-year-old leader, still recovering form the effects of a crippling stroke over a year ago, also allowed Visnews to film him on an inspection of a community development project -- only the third time he has been filmed at all since his paralysing stroke.

The interview, in which Marshal Lon Nol spoke to Davis through an interpreter, was filmed at his villa in Kompong Som, a port town south west of Phnom Penh, the capital. During his inspection of the important community development project nearby, where a model village is being built for the first time, the Marshal walked unaided -- a substantial improvement in his condition. Davis reported that his health now seems relatively good, and that he was in excellent spirits when touring the development -- one of his favourite projects.

During the interview the Marshal -- now undisputed head of state since Friday's resignation from the post of Cheng Heng -- said the major problem facing the Khmer Republic was the socio-economic situation. He was trying to draw the two together, he said.

Marshal Lon Nol, who is expected to remain as head of the country's armed forces. surprised Khmer politicians on Friday when the annulled the nearly-completed new constitution. He has governed the country as Prime Minister since the overthrow of Prince Norodom Sihanouk nearly two years ago.
