  • Description

A rally commemorating the birthday of the late President Ho Chi Minh was held in the Bahdin Hall, Hanoi, on Tuesday 18 May. It was attended by most North Vietnam leaders, including Le Duan....First Secretary of the Vietnamese Labour Party....who had just returned from visit to the Soviet Union and the People's Republic of China. He was the principal speaker at the rally. Among other leaders were President Ton Duc Thang, Premier Phan Van Dong, Truong Chinh....the Chairman of the National Assembly, Defence Minister Vo Nguyen Giap, and Nguyen Duy Trinh....North Vietnam's Foreign Minister.

Addressing the rally, most leaders emphasised the importance of the 19th Labour Party General Meeting when it was resolved to complete the building of a socialistic country, and all in attendance were exhorted to help achieve this aim. Foreign Minister Nguyen Duy Trinh said he believed this was the only way to follow the will of the late President, Ho Chi Minh. It would also, he suggested, help defeat American imperialism. Reporting on his recent visits, Le Duan confirmed continued support for North Vietnam from the Soviet Union and the People's Republic of China, as it continued its fight against the United States and South Vietnam. Observers suggest the North Vietnam Government, and Labour Party may initiate new diplomatic and militaristic campaigns.
