    Delegates to the All-Africa Council of Churches met in Khartoum, capital of Sudan, on Sunday (16 February) to begin a six-day conference on human rights in Africa. The meeting was opened by Sudan's President, Jaafar El Nimeiry.

    President Nimeiry spoke of his country's progress towards unity to confront the great challenges that face all nations and all peoples. He described this as leading to "a style of international co-operation based on common interest and respect of the rights of others".

    President Nimeiry also spoke about the situation of the black African majority in South Africa. he expressed hopes that the South African Government would be persuaded to extend full rights to all Africans within its boundaries.

    In reply to the Sudanese President's speech, one delegate to the conference hailed President Nimeiry's efforts towards peace in Ethiopia, where Government troops are engaged in fighting with secessionist forces in the northern province of Eritrea.
