    AN AEROBEE 150A ROCKET CARRYING A 185-POUND PAYLOAD TO BE USED IN U.S.-JAPANESE EXPERIMENTS WAS LAUNCHED 139 MILES INTO THE IONOSPHERE FROM THE WALLOPS ISLAND, VIRGINIA, STATION OF THE NATIONAL ASTRONAUTICS AND SPACE ADMINISTRATION YESTERDAY (25 SEPTEMBER).

    THE PAYLOAD LANDED EIGHT MINUTES LATER ABOUT 80 MILES DOWNRANGE IN THE ATLANTIC OCEAN.THE SPACE AGENCY SAID PRELIMINARY DATA INDICATED THAT ALL EXPERIMENTS FUNCTIONED AS DESIGNED.

    THE PRIME PURPOSE OF THE U.S.-JAPANESE SHOT WAS TO MEASURE ELECTRON DENSITY AND TEMPERATURE SIMULTANEOUSLY BY DIFFERENT METHODS.

    MEASUREMENTS MADE WITH A LANGMUIR PROBE, SUPPLIED BY NASA'S GODDARD SPACE FLIGHT CENTER, ARE BEING COMPARED WITH MEASUREMENTS MADE WITH A RADIO-FREQUENCY RESONANCE PROBE DEVELOPED BY THE RADIO RESEARCH LABORATORY IN TOKYO.BOTH DEVICES WERE CARRIED BY THE ROCKET.

    NASA OFFICIALS SAID THE RESONANCE PROBE TECHNIQUE MAY MAKE IT POSSIBLE TO MEASURE ELECTRON DENSITY AND TEMPERATURE SIMULTANEOUSLY WITH ONE INSTRUMENT AND TO PROCESS DATA FASTER.

    DR.KUNIO HIRAO, CHIEF SCIENTIST OF THE RADIO RESEARCH LABORATORY, WAS THE PROJECT SCIENTIST FOR THE U.S.-JAPANESE EXPERIMENT.ALSO ASSISTING WAS TOSHIO MURAOKA, SCIENTIST WITH YUKOHAWA ELECTRIC WORKS, LIMITED, TOKYO.
