  • Description

About 3,000 left-wingers held a rally in the Sports Pavilion in the northern portuguese town of Oporto on Saturday (10 January). They were demanding the release of leftists who have been jailed since the unsuccessful extreme left-wing military uprising in Portugal in November.

Feeling in Oporto has been intense since New Year's Day when four people were killed in a riot outside the Custodians prison where 100 left wingers involved in November's coup are being held. The deaths occurred when the para military Nationalist Republican guard opened fire on the thousands of demonstrators.

The demonstrators at Saturday's rally in the Sports Pavilion snag the famous Socialist song the Internationals and chanted slogans while making clenched fist salutes.

Two bombs went off in the north of Portugal during the day. One destroyed the car of a journalist in Oporto who works for the conservative 'Comercio de Porto' newspaper. The other destroyed a vehicle belonging to a Communist party member in the nearby town of Fafe.
