  • Description

The United Nations Secretary General, Doctor Waloheim, warned on Wednesday (13 February), that an overall settlement of the Arab-Israeli conflict was still a long way off.
He also warned that an early resumption of the Geneva peace talks could not be expected in the near future.
Doctor Weldheim was commenting on the Middle East situation after long and reportedly involved talks in Geneva with the Finnish commander of the United Nations troops in the Middle East, General Siilasuvo.
However, he said that the disengagement of Egyptian and Israeli troops on the Sinai front was proceeding smoothly and was likely to meet the timetable agreed in the Israeli-Egyptian accords concluded last month.
Warning that time, patience and perseverance were needed, Doctor Waldheim said efforts had been under way for some time to disengage Israeli and Syrian troops on the Syrian front but that no conclusion had been reached.
Many difficulties still had to be solved before the peace conference could be resumed.
