    THE DISTRICT COUNCIL ELECTIONS HAVE BEGUN IN EARNEST IN ALL THE FIVE DIVISIONS IN SARAWAK. THE ELECTIONS WILL LEAD TO THE SELECTION OF THE MEMBERS OF THE COLONY'S FIRST ELECTED GOVERNMENT.

    A TOTAL OF FOUR HUNDRED AND TWENTY FIVE DISTRICT COUNCIL SEATS ARE BEING CONTESTED.

    MEANTIME, VOTING HAS ENDED IN THE RIVERINE VILLAGE OF BATU KAWA, SOME SIX MILES AWAY FROM KUCHING, THE SARAWAK CAPITAL. THE VILLAGE IS A STRONGHOLD OF THE SARAWAK UNITED PEOPLE'S PARTY WHICH STRONGLY OPPOSSES MALAYSIA.

    OUT OF ITS POPULATION OF SIX THOUSAND, SOME ONE THOUSAND FIVE HUNDRED WERE REGISTERED VOTERS WHO TRAVELLED TO THE POLLING STATIONS IN RIVER BOATS - THEIR MAIN SOURCE OF TRANSPORTATION.

    ALTHOUGH POLLING DAY IN THE CAPITAL WILL NOT BEGIN UNTIL JUNE 23, CANDIDATES HERE HAVE NOT PUT UP ANY POSTERS, BANNERS OR PLACARDS.
