  • Description

Northern Ireland's Prime Minister, Major James Chichester-Clark, resigned late last night (20 March), leaving the political future of the province in doubt. The likeliest contender for the post appears to be Development Minister Brian Faulkner (50), who shares Major Chichester-Clark's moderate line on military intervention in the present communal troubles.

Waiting in the wings is 46-year-old William Craig, who was Minister for Home Affairs until 1968. He has recently been shunned by both the Ulster Cabinet and the British Government because of his demands for stronger measures against rioters.

The key issue is the role of the British army peacekeeping force. Mr. Craig's supporters among the ruling Unionist Party would like to see troops enter and occupy Catholic areas of Belfast in order to halt the activities of republican extremists, and demand the interment of suspects.
