  • Description

Competitors and organisers were into their final stages of preparations on Friday (30 January) with the start of the Innsbruck Winter Olympics only five days away.

About half of the 1,036 competitors from 36 countries had checked into the Olympic village or the Nordic ski base at nearby Seefeld to complete their training.

Others have stayed at nearby resorts where thy have more access to ski slopes and rinks.

Security around Olympic sites was tightened as top officials arrived to join the competitors.

The executive board of the International Olympic Committee (IOC) worked through the day on plans for the full IOC session which begins on Sunday. But its main concern was the crucial meeting on Saturday with delegates from the Canadian Olympic organising committee to discuss the Montreal Games.

The most costly new facility for the games, the combined bobsleigh and toboggan run, opened on Friday for training with record times.

Three Austrian girls practising for the single seater event broke the record of 43.37 seconds. Austrian men also broke the record for the one-seater luge over the 1,220 metre run at Igls, just outside Innsbruck.

The organising committee is keeping the accent of the Games firmly on sport, rather than expensive cultural side-shows and the jet-set world of apres-ski.

SYNOPSIS: With the Winter Olympics at Innsbruck only five days away, competitors and organisers are making their final preparations. The population of the city too, is also preparing for the expected influx of up to one and a half million visitors for the Games.

A recent public opinion poll among the city's one hundred and eighteen thousand people, produced a bit three-to-one vote of approval for the decision to hold the Games there. When Innosbruck hosted the nineteen sixty four games, the million visitors resulted in a tourist boom. With almost every Tyrolean family connected in some way to the tourist industry it is understandable the games would be welcomed.

About half of the one thousand and thirty six competitors from thirty six countries by Saturday had checked into the Olympic village or the Nordic ski base at nearby Seefeld to complete their training.

Others have remained at nearby resorts where thy can have more access to ski slopes and rinks for the vital eleventh hour preparation.

The Olympic flame had arrived in Vienna for the slow relay to Innsbruck in time for the opening. Recent snow falls have left a deep carpet at all skiing sites, ensuring god conditions for the competitions.
